Let me introduce myself! My name is Nicky Stolker and I am based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I love making things by hand. This already started when I was a youngster. I used to make all dolls furniture, dolls dresses and anything I could think of by hand. We didn’t have very much growing up, so my creativity was a great asset and a blessing. After high school, I enrolled into a teacher training course for Textiles. This gave me great insight into fabrics and fashion design. I spent a few years overseas and now I am based back in Amsterdam, working in the film industry in the camera department, which I love.
I became a mum in December 2012 and I have a beautiful daughter. This has sparked my creativity even more! I’m totally engrossed in making dolls.
The material I use is felt. I love working with felt as it is easy to work with, it comes in great colors, it is soft and child friendly. Other fabric I use are cotton and any cute and beautiful fabric I can find. I love recycling clothing/ baby clothes/ sheets anything useful really.
I’m currently looking into making dolls with latex. I have this picture in my mind, which I would love to make. I am making a model with clay first, then I will make a cast from plaster. Latex will be poured into the mold until it is thick enough. I invite you to look at my photos to see my progress. The head, hands and legs will be latex and the rest will be made out of cotton. A soft body.
The reason I love dolls so much is because they enrich your fantasy world. As a child you imagine this complete world around these creations. All age groups like them I have noticed. For a little while I made all my family members out of felt. They were really uncanny. I stopped, because I ran out of family members. I really enjoy making archetype dolls.
I would love to share my creations with you. Let me know what you think of them by emailing me on mikachudolls@gmail.com
